Breath is freedom. It’s standing on the edge of a cliff with an endless drop and stepping off only to float. It’s unclenching your fists and running so fast your feet can’t feel the ground because there’s somewhere to go. It’s the rushing of a river that goes downstream with no end. It’s the one that breaks away from the mass and launches into the unknown, never faltering in its step when its only goal is to get away. Breath is the distance between you and the world, the feeling of wishing that you could slip unnoticed into the ranks but the relief at being free to reach for the sky.
It’s the knowledge that hiding where it’s safe would be so easy but so, so painful. It is being distracted by what there is to do and forgetting about what there is right now. Breath is the catch in your throat as your chest swells in unfathomable excitement, creeping through your limbs and bursting in every fibre of your being. Breath is the ground trembling as you tense to spring, it is the wind in your face as you close your eyes and blast off. Breath is the space between your feet and the ground, and the relief that there is no one else in this sky but you.
