Space is the first burst of inspiration. It’s the first spark that chases away the darkness, the beginning lines of the script in which we are all players, that overture of “let there be light”. It’s the sensation of touching pen to paper, of fresh paint on a canvas. It is the start of something new. Space is almost all parts of the story — the beginning, and the constant shape-shifting of things as we all march towards the end, but for some reason, you just never really get there. Space is constantly in flux, it never stops. It’s the ever-changing idea that there is something more, something underneath, something that isn’t necessarily between the lines of the story. Space, is the undercurrent of everything that is the story itself.
And somehow, you can find Space in anything. It’s the feeling of sitting on a ledge, and realising the distance between you and the ground. It’s holding a plush toy in your hand, and feeling the exact roughness of the felt that you know it took someone days to stitch together. It’s looking up at the stars and realising just how many arms lengths it would take you to reach up and touch the sky. Space is the physical, the material, the fabric of the universe. And it’s what holds and links everything together, if only you knew how to use it.
And yet, there are times when Space will make you feel loneliness. It’s the crushing realisation that a relationship won’t work out and that you’re losing your best friend. It’s realising friendships only work when you make the effort. Space can be crushing numbness, it can be relentless joy, but it’s that potential for you to take a step back and comprehend everything that makes up Space. More importantly, it’s having the foresight to understand what that means for everything else, and coming to terms with it.
Space isn’t about looking back on the past, and harping on old mistakes. It’s not what the future holds, or its inherent uncertainty. Space is what is, but at the same time, it’s what that means for everything else.
