Knighthood isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s thinking that you have to be the parent, the one that makes sure everything runs smoothly, that everyone is alright. It’s feeling that people expect such things from you. It’s having a god and a hero complex, and healthier Knights can make this work. They know their limits. And the unhealthy ones? They don’t know theirs; they take everything into their own hands.
Being a Knight is doing any and all of the dirty work, so that others don’t have to. Watching over their friends when they don’t need to, or worse, when they really shouldn’t be.
It’s always being at the calm of the storm. Never knowing when shit’s gonna hit the fan, so you always want to be prepared for anything. It’s not trusting anyone else to take care of your friends. They wouldn’t know how to do it properly; you’ve been doing it longer. Yet, you want to be able to let them help you and your friends. It gets to be a tiring job, trying to make sure everyone is happy. But you remain wary of this new person who wants to take care of your friends. You’ll need to get to know them better before you allow them too close to anyone.
Sometimes, being a Knight can hurt. We hide behind our facades, acting like all is well with the world. Some get so good at this form of acting, that they wholeheartedly believe that everything is fine.
But deep down, we know that not everything is alright.
Deep down, deeper for some, there’s the underlying thought that this kind of thought process isn’t healthy. That wanting to do all the work for everyone isn’t healthy, for either parties. That having a god and or hero complex is the exact opposite of good for you. But we keep doing it anyways.
Because we want to help. We want to help so, so much.
And this seems like the only way to help. It’s worked so far. Why not keep at it?
All Knights need to grow, too. Who doesn’t? A Knight needs to learn that it is okay to step back. It can be healthy, even. It’s okay to let others take their chances. Sometimes you even need to. A Knight needs to accept that they aren’t the best, that they don’t need to be. Their friends will still love them if they aren’t. That’s what friends are for, after all. Finally, a Knight needs to learn to let others pick up their Shield, and to put down their own. Open up to others. Confide in them. Be there Knight, yes, but also be yourself. Don’t be afraid to do so.
In the end, you will thank yourself for doing so.
