tipping is such an insidious labour issue because moralistic people turn it into “always tip! not tipping makes you a bad person” because how is a service worker supposed to pay their rent without the tip money? when in reality their employer is relying on misdirected anger toward customers to distract from the fact they aren’t paying a liveable wage to increase their own profits and placing the blame on the customer for not paying a tip or the worker more often than not for “not doing enough to earn a tip”.
what i’m saying is kill your bosses and form a union
As someone who used to be a busser, host, and server this is something I feel strongly. While I do believe in always tipping, it is only a bandaid solution to the much larger problem of living somewhere where minimum wage is not a living wage (plus all those states where they pay servers like $2/hr and the tips are supposed to cover the rest but if you make “too much” in tips they take it out of your paycheck). I was fortunate to work in places where after tipping out the bar/bussers/kitchen/dishwasher/etc you were able to keep whatever you made on top of regular minimum wage. WA has some super shitty labor laws but it could sadly be much worse.
Really no one should have to rely on tips to survive but until that day comes: always tip, then kill your bosses and form a union.
